Habitat Patch Isolation Distance Tool

Ideal circular patch separation from supplied centers/radii, without inferring functional connectivity.

Loading tool…

Description

Return center separation and circular habitat boundary gap.

Conservation monitoring depends on survey effort, detection assumptions, area/time bases and explicit unknown-status policies. A local probability or coverage ratio describes supplied observations and models without establishing population abundance, ecological success or legal protection.

Return center separation and circular habitat boundary gap.

When to use this tool

Use Habitat Patch Isolation Distance when checking a supplied conservation-monitoring, geometry or evidence-basis convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter firstX, firstY, secondX, secondY, firstRadius, secondRadius. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read centerDistance, boundaryGap. Use the output convention below.

Return center separation and circular habitat boundary gap. Require nonnegative patch radii; centerDistance = hypot(dx,dy), boundaryGap = max(0,distance-r1-r2).1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Use one planar length unit; circular patches and straight gaps omit actual habitat shapes, connectivity and barriers.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use an appropriate ecological sampling and detection model, verified field records and actual habitat geometry for substantive conservation inference.
