Description
Return habitat perimeter per area.
Conservation monitoring depends on survey effort, detection assumptions, area/time bases and explicit unknown-status policies. A local probability or coverage ratio describes supplied observations and models without establishing population abundance, ecological success or legal protection.
Return habitat perimeter per area.
When to use this tool
Use Habitat Patch Edge Density when checking a supplied conservation-monitoring, geometry or evidence-basis convention.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter perimeter, area. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read edgeDensity. Use the output convention below.
Return habitat perimeter per area. Require perimeter >= 0 and area > 0; edgeDensity = perimeter/area.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| perimeter | Perimeter | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| area | Area | Required. Finite number; strictly above 0. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| edgeDensity | Edge Density | Required. Finite number. |

"output": {

} Limitations and assumptions
- Output has inverse-length units; boundary-counting conventions and ecological effects are not selected or inferred.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use an appropriate ecological sampling and detection model, verified field records and actual habitat geometry for substantive conservation inference.
