Population Step Birth Death Balance

Balance explicitly supplied population events over one step without projecting growth or selecting an organism model.

Description

Update supplied population counts by births and deaths.

Computational biology models distinguish counts, rates, reaction orders, stoichiometric signs and state constraints. A volume-scaling factor is only one component of a stochastic propensity, and a supplied flux bound is separate from a feasible network solution. Bookkeeping balances do not infer unobserved biological states or validate a model.

Update supplied population counts by births and deaths.

When to use this tool

Use Population Step Birth Death Balance when you already have openingCount, births, deaths and need to update supplied population counts by births and deaths.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter openingCount, births, deaths. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read closingCount, netChange. Use the output convention below.

Require nonnegative safe opening/birth counts and safe deaths within the floating-point opening+births sum; return opening+births-deaths and births-deaths.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
openingCountOpening CountRequired. Safe integer; minimum 0.
birthsBirthsRequired. Safe integer; minimum 0.
deathsDeathsRequired. Safe integer; minimum 0.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
closingCount(openingCount+births)-deaths using floating-point arithmetic, then checked for safe integer range. Keep openingCount+births safe to avoid intermediate rounding.Required. Safe integer.
netChangebirths-deaths; does not repair a rounded intermediate closing balance.Required. Safe integer.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Ordinary floating-point addition is used. Keep opening+births within the safe integer range even if the final balance would be safe; otherwise rounding can silently alter the returned count. No population or process is verified.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Check the full model definition, data provenance, reaction conventions and numerical implementation. Use complete network, stochastic or population analyses when needed; local count balances, priorities and bound checks cannot establish biological mechanisms or model adequacy.
