Description

Return one line's contribution to population stanza-length variance.

Comparative-literature annotations connect editions, passages, speakers, structural frames and count units. Literal keys and normalized lengths can support consistent records while textual meaning, translation fidelity and bibliographic authority remain matters for source-aware editorial analysis.

Return one line's contribution to population stanza-length variance.

When to use this tool

Use Stanza Line Length Variance Term when checking a supplied literary annotation, cross-edition offset or count convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter lineLength, meanLength, stanzaLines. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read squaredDeviation, varianceContribution. Use the output convention below.

Return one line's contribution to population stanza-length variance. Require nonnegative whole lineLength, meanLength >= 0 and whole stanzaLines >= 1; squaredDeviation = (line-mean)², contribution divides by stanzaLines.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • The mean and denominator are supplied; this is not a full variance estimate or a sample-variance term using n-1.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Inspect the source editions and their annotation/counting policy for substantive literary, translation or provenance conclusions.
