Conversation Overlap Two Utterances Tool

Measure the intersection duration of two half-open utterance intervals in one shared time unit.

Description

Require ordered start/end pairs and return the positive intersection duration or zero.

Communication records use speaker labels, acknowledgments, durations, turns, and presentation timing. A count or formatted label describes the supplied record; it does not establish understanding, agreement, or communication quality.

Require ordered start/end pairs and return the positive intersection duration or zero.

When to use this tool

Use Conversation Overlap Two Utterances when you need one conversation or presentation-record component under an explicit counting convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter firstStart, firstEnd, secondStart, secondEnd. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read overlapDuration. Use the output convention below.

Require ordered start/end pairs and return the positive intersection duration or zero.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Use a common time coordinate and unit; overlap does not by itself distinguish interruption, cooperative speech, or diarization error.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Review the complete interaction, transcript, and intended communication requirements separately.
