Working Memory Probe Position Budget Tool

Calculate working memory probe position budget from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Description

Check a memory-probe position under zero/one-based indexing.

Cognitive research records can encode stimuli, response timing, probability assumptions and observation support. Local differences and caller-defined tolerance labels do not establish perceptual validity, a cognitive mechanism, statistical equivalence or a clinical assessment.

Check a memory-probe position under zero/one-based indexing.

When to use this tool

Use Working Memory Probe Position Budget when checking a supplied cognitive-task timing, stimulus, probability or evidence convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter setSize, probePosition, zeroBased. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read index, valid, remainingItems. Inspect valid before interpreting the associated values.

Check a memory-probe position under zero/one-based indexing. Require nonnegative whole setSize/probePosition; index = probePosition-(zeroBased ? 0 : 1), valid tests [0,setSize), remainingItems = size-index-1.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
setSizeSet SizeRequired. Safe integer; minimum 0.
probePositionProbe PositionRequired. Safe integer; minimum 0.
zeroBasedZero BasedRequired. Boolean.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
indexPosition under the explicit indexing convention; inspect any missing-value sentinel.Required. Safe integer.
validWhether this local input/result condition holds; inspect the limitations before treating it as full validation.Required. Boolean.
remainingItemssetSize-index-1 even when valid=false; an invalid position is not clamped.Required. Safe integer.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Invalid positions return an algebraic index/remainder rather than an input error; inspect valid before interpreting them.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use a validated study design, calibrated measurements and appropriate statistical/professional interpretation for cognitive or health conclusions.
