Visual Search Item Spacing Tool

Compute uniform supplied visual-search spacing under an explicit endpoint convention.

Description

Return uniform visual-item spacing under an endpoint convention.

Cognitive research records can encode stimuli, response timing, probability assumptions and observation support. Local differences and caller-defined tolerance labels do not establish perceptual validity, a cognitive mechanism, statistical equivalence or a clinical assessment.

Return uniform visual-item spacing under an endpoint convention.

When to use this tool

Use Visual Search Item Spacing when checking a supplied cognitive-task timing, stimulus, probability or evidence convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter span, itemCount, includeBothEndpoints. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read spacing. Use the output convention below.

Return uniform visual-item spacing under an endpoint convention. Require span >= 0 and whole itemCount at least two when including both endpoints, otherwise at least one; spacing = span/(count-1) or span/count.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
spanSpanRequired. Finite number; minimum 0.
itemCountItem CountRequired. Safe integer.
includeBothEndpointsInclude Both EndpointsRequired. Boolean.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
spacingSpacingRequired. Finite number.

Limitations and assumptions

  • The span's spatial/angular unit is preserved; item sizes, display calibration and perceptual crowding are not modeled.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use a validated study design, calibrated measurements and appropriate statistical/professional interpretation for cognitive or health conclusions.
