Wind Chill Climatological Monthly Mean

Summarize caller observed month exposure using existing wind-chill equation only where T≤10 C and wind≥4.8 km/h; invalid observations are excluded with coverage, not computed from monthly mean weather or certified cold safety.

Description

Wind chill estimates the effect of wind on exposed-skin heat loss in cold conditions.

Wind chill estimates the effect of wind on exposed-skin heat loss in cold conditions. A monthly summary should distinguish hours where the equation applies from hours outside its temperature and wind range.1, 2

Summarize caller observed month exposure using existing wind-chill equation only where T≤10 C and wind≥4.8 km/h; invalid observations are excluded with coverage, not computed from monthly mean weather or certified cold safety.

When to use Wind Chill Climatological Monthly Mean

Use this tool to summarize caller observed month exposure using existing wind-chill equation only where T≤10 C and wind≥4.8 km/h; invalid observations are excluded with coverage, not computed from monthly mean weather or certified cold safety.

Prepare the climate observations and any independently chosen thresholds or model parameters. Confirm units, daily coverage, time order and the intended seasonal window.

How to use Wind Chill Climatological Monthly Mean and understand its results

  1. Prepare the climate observations and any independently chosen thresholds or model parameters. Confirm units, daily coverage, time order and the intended seasonal window.
  2. Enter observedAirTemperaturesC, observedWindSpeedsKmPerHour, representedHours using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read validWindChillMeanC, validExposureFraction, validObservationCount. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
observedAirTemperaturesCObserved air temperatures clist of numberRequired
observedWindSpeedsKmPerHourObserved wind speeds km per hourlist of numberRequired
representedHoursRepresented hourslist of numberRequired

Enter aligned air temperatures in °C, nonnegative wind speeds in km/h and positive exposure hours. Only observations with temperature at most 10 °C and wind speed at least 4.8 km/h enter the wind-chill calculation. The tool computes an exposure-weighted mean over those observations, their count and their fraction of the total supplied hours. It rejects a dataset with no applicable observations.

Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths.

W = 13.12 + 0.6215T − 11.37v^0.16 + 0.3965Tv^0.16; mean = Σ(W_i h_i) / Σ h_i over applicable observations

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

The mean is conditional on the included cold and windy hours; excluded hours are represented by the coverage fraction. Wind measurement height and exposure conditions matter. This is an index calculation, not a personal exposure limit, frostbite forecast or measurement of an object's temperature.

Numeric inputs and returned numeric values must be finite; an unrepresentable returned value produces an error. Numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Humidex Monthly Statistics: Summarize measured vapor-pressure/temperature humidex across actual represented monthly exposure; no RH/dewpoint saturation reconstruction or health recommendation. For a complementary task, use Heat Index Climatological Exceedance Counter: Count exposure above caller heat-index threshold using explicitly domain-restricted Rothfusz base regression, not the existing Steadman apparent-temperature tool; no low-RH adjustment or heat-health/work safety certification.
