Humidex Monthly Statistics

Summarize measured vapor-pressure/temperature humidex across actual represented monthly exposure; no RH/dewpoint saturation reconstruction or health recommendation.

Description

Humidex combines air temperature and water-vapor pressure into an index of hot, humid conditions.

Humidex combines air temperature and water-vapor pressure into an index of hot, humid conditions. Weighting observations by their represented hours makes the mean and exceedance exposure consistent when samples cover unequal durations.1

Summarize measured vapor-pressure/temperature humidex across actual represented monthly exposure; no RH/dewpoint saturation reconstruction or health recommendation.

When to use Humidex Monthly Statistics

Use this tool to summarize measured vapor-pressure/temperature humidex across actual represented monthly exposure; no RH/dewpoint saturation reconstruction or health recommendation.

Prepare the climate observations and any independently chosen thresholds or model parameters. Confirm units, daily coverage, time order and the intended seasonal window.

How to use Humidex Monthly Statistics and understand its results

  1. Prepare the climate observations and any independently chosen thresholds or model parameters. Confirm units, daily coverage, time order and the intended seasonal window.
  2. Enter observedTemperaturesC, observedVaporPressuresHpa, representedHours, callerHumidexThreshold using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read humidexValues, exposureWeightedHumidex, hoursAboveCallerHumidexThreshold. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.

observedVaporPressuresHpaObserved vapor pressures hPalist of numberRequired
representedHoursRepresented hourslist of numberRequired
callerHumidexThresholdCaller humidex thresholdnumberRequired

Enter aligned temperatures in °C, nonnegative vapor pressures in hPa and positive exposure hours, plus a finite exceedance threshold. The tool computes each humidex value, its exposure-weighted mean, and total hours with humidex strictly above the threshold. Equality does not count toward exceedance exposure.

Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths.

humidex_i = T_i + (5/9)(e_i − 10); mean = Σ(humidex_i h_i)/Σ h_i

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Vapor pressure must be supplied; the tool does not derive it from dew point or relative humidity. The summary is conditional on the sampled periods and their weights. Humidex is an environmental index rather than a personal health assessment or authorization for working in heat.

Numeric inputs and returned numeric values must be finite; an unrepresentable returned value produces an error. Numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Heat Index Climatological Exceedance Counter: Count exposure above caller heat-index threshold using explicitly domain-restricted Rothfusz base regression, not the existing Steadman apparent-temperature tool; no low-RH adjustment or heat-health/work safety certification. For a complementary task, use Wind Chill Climatological Monthly Mean: Summarize caller observed month exposure using existing wind-chill equation only where T≤10 C and wind≥4.8 km/h; invalid observations are excluded with coverage, not computed from monthly mean weather or certified cold safety.
