Description
Scale nominal heat-exchanger area to preserve a supplied UA product.
Engineering scalar terms depend on mass versus mole bases, absolute state variables and the process boundary. A vapor/liquid ratio differs from a reaction equilibrium constant, space time differs from a measured residence-time distribution, and fouling-area scaling preserves a specified heat-transfer product. Supplied terms do not validate an actual process.
Scale nominal heat-exchanger area to preserve a supplied UA product.
When to use this tool
Use Heat Exchanger Area Fouling Adjustment when you already have cleanArea, cleanOverallCoefficient, fouledOverallCoefficient and need to scale nominal heat-exchanger area to preserve a supplied UA product.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter cleanArea, cleanOverallCoefficient, fouledOverallCoefficient. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read requiredFouledArea, areaIncrease. Use the output convention below.
Require cleanArea>=0 and both overall coefficients positive/finite; fouledArea=cleanArea*(Uclean/Ufouled), increase=fouledArea-cleanArea.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| cleanArea | Clean Area | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| cleanOverallCoefficient | Clean Overall Coefficient | Required. Finite number; strictly above 0. |
| fouledOverallCoefficient | Fouled Overall Coefficient | Required. Finite number; strictly above 0. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| requiredFouledArea | cleanArea*cleanOverallCoefficient/fouledOverallCoefficient, preserving UA for the same duty and driving conditions. | Required. Finite number. |
| areaIncrease | Area Increase | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Assumes unchanged duty and driving-temperature basis. A larger supplied fouled coefficient gives negative increase; no fouling model, heat balance, equipment sizing or safe design is validated.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use complete material, energy, phase and equipment models with verified operating conditions. Check concentration bases, gas reference states and measurement uncertainty before applying local ratios or balances to process design or operation.
