Description
Return germination fraction under a lost-seed denominator policy.
Plant observations and seed or growth summaries depend on sampling area, observation time, material basis and inclusion policy. A local count or ratio can be consistent with the supplied records without estimating a complete population, establishing germination quality or identifying a growth mechanism.
Return germination fraction under a lost-seed denominator policy.
When to use this tool
Use Seed Germination Censored Denominator when checking the stated botanical observation, seed, growth or coverage convention.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter germinated, observedUngerminated, lost, totalSown, excludeLost. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read denominator, germinationFraction, lostFraction. Use the output convention below.
Return germination fraction under a lost-seed denominator policy. Require whole germinated+observedUngerminated+lost = positive totalSown and at least one observed seed; denominator excludes lost only when excludeLost, lostFraction always divides by total.1

| lost | Lost | Required. Safe integer; minimum 0. |
| totalSown | Total Sown | Required. Safe integer; minimum 1. |
| excludeLost | Exclude Lost | Required. Boolean. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| denominator | Denominator | Required. Safe integer. |
| germinationFraction | Germination Fraction | Required. Finite number. |
| lostFraction | Lost Fraction | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Even the total denominator requires a nonempty observed base; loss mechanism, actual germination and unbiased inference are not established.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use verified observations and an appropriate sampling, growth or material-balance model; assess uncertainty and biological meaning separately.
