Leaf Area Reference Scale

Scale an explicit segmented leaf-pixel area to a supplied coplanar reference area without segmenting an image.

Description

Scale a supplied leaf pixel area using a physical reference area.

Botanical observations distinguish specimen provenance, sampling states, germination records, image area and category vocabularies. Excluded observations differ from failed germination, and a pixel-area calibration must use an area ratio rather than a length ratio. Source-qualified labels preserve reported identifications without confirming them.

Scale a supplied leaf pixel area using a physical reference area.

When to use this tool

Use Leaf Area Reference Scale when you already have measuredPixels, referencePixels, referenceArea and need to scale a supplied leaf pixel area using a physical reference area.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter measuredPixels, referencePixels, referenceArea. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read leafArea. Use the output convention below.

Require measured pixel area>=0, positive reference pixel area and referenceArea>0; return measuredPixels*referenceArea/referencePixels.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
measuredPixelsMeasured pixel area, not a linear pixel distance.Required. Finite number; minimum 0.
referencePixelsPositive reference pixel area corresponding to referenceArea.Required. Finite number; strictly above 0.
referenceAreaReference AreaRequired. Finite number; strictly above 0.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
leafAreameasuredPixels*referenceArea/referencePixels; no squared length ratio.Required. Finite number.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Both pixel quantities are area counts, not linear lengths; the ratio is not squared again. No image segmentation, scale validity, perspective, leaf identity or actual area is verified.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Inspect the original specimens, observation logs, calibrated images and taxonomic sources. Use the complete survey or experimental method for biological interpretation; local fractions and record checks do not infer unobserved states or mechanisms.
