Plate Control Edge Distance Tool

Calculate plate control edge distance from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Description

Return a well's minimum grid distance to a plate edge.

Laboratory quantities depend on sample volume, concentration basis, blank correction, geometry and calibration. A dilution, recovery fraction or signal correction evaluates a supplied measurement model without validating the assay, identifying a substance or establishing biological or clinical performance.

Return a well's minimum grid distance to a plate edge.

When to use this tool

Use Plate Control Edge Distance when checking the stated laboratory bookkeeping, signal, sample or measurement convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter rows, columns, row, column, origin. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read edgeDistance, onEdge. Inspect onEdge before interpreting the associated values.

Return a well's minimum grid distance to a plate edge. Require valid integer row/column counts, origin zero/one and in-range coordinates; edgeDistance is minimum row/column steps to any edge, onEdge means zero.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Distance is grid steps rather than physical length; this does not establish assay edge effects or appropriate control placement.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use verified sample records, calibrated equipment and an appropriate validated measurement method; assess uncertainty and practical laboratory conditions independently.
