Description
Map a supplied one-based microplate row and column to a row-major zero-based index.
Biotechnology records distinguish sample and run identifiers, assay observations, replicate positions and quantity bases. Row-major indexing needs an explicit origin, and a wet-to-dry mass factor is the inverse of a dry-mass fraction. Supplied labels and scalar ratios do not validate an assay, establish identity or demonstrate biological performance.
Map a supplied one-based microplate row and column to a row-major zero-based index.
When to use this tool
Use Microplate Well Linear Index when you already have oneBasedRow, oneBasedColumn, rowCount, columnCount and need to map a supplied one-based microplate row and column to a row-major zero-based index.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter oneBasedRow, oneBasedColumn, rowCount, columnCount. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read zeroBasedIndex. Use the output convention below.
Require positive safe row/column counts and coordinates within them; compute (row-1)*columnCount+column-1 with BigInt and export a safe integer.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| oneBasedRow | One Based Row | Required. Safe integer; minimum 1. |
| oneBasedColumn | One Based Column | Required. Safe integer; minimum 1. |
| rowCount | Row Count | Required. Safe integer; minimum 1. |
| columnCount | Column Count | Required. Safe integer; minimum 1. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| zeroBasedIndex | Exact row-major (row-1)*columnCount+column-1; numeric export required safe. | Required. Safe integer. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- No physical plate, orientation, well identity, contents or procedure is verified; unsafe index exports are rejected even for individually valid dimensions.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Review original sample, instrument and assay records with the full calibration and experimental method. Check units, index conventions and source provenance before combining local results into an interpretation.
