Assay Blank Subtract Reading Tool

Subtract a matched analytical blank while preserving negative corrected observations.

Description

Return sampleReading minus blankReading as correctedReading.

A residual is the signed difference between an observation and a declared reference or blank. Retaining its sign is useful for detecting overcorrection and incompatible measurement bases.

Return sampleReading minus blankReading as correctedReading.

When to use this tool

Use Assay Blank Subtract Reading when you need an explicit assay residual or supported-count comparison.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter sampleReading, blankReading. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read correctedReading. Use the output convention below.

Return sampleReading minus blankReading as correctedReading.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Use a compatible signal basis; negative results are retained without censoring, detection-limit handling, normalization, or biological interpretation.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Inspect measurement uncertainty, reporting qualifiers, and the original laboratory records before interpreting a discrepancy.
