Taxonomic Synonym Source Priority Date Tool

Compare supplied publication chronology and availability flags without a nomenclatural priority ruling.

Description

Order two supplied taxonomic dates under availability flags.

Taxonomic names, authorship strings, nomenclatural types and source-defined taxon concepts are related but distinct records. A literal token parser or source-label comparison can preserve a stated convention without resolving accepted taxonomy or establishing compliance with the applicable nomenclatural code.

Order two supplied taxonomic dates under availability flags.

When to use this tool

Use Taxonomic Synonym Source Priority Date when checking the stated taxonomic source, name-token, date or concept-support convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter firstDay, secondDay, firstAvailable, secondAvailable. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read dateGap, earlierAvailable. Use the output convention below.

Order two supplied taxonomic dates under availability flags. dateGap = secondDay-firstDay; earlierAvailable prioritizes whichever is flagged available, then earlier day, tie or neither.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Dates and availability are asserted, not nomenclatural priority rulings, valid publication evidence or code-compliant availability checks.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Consult the original taxonomic treatment and applicable nomenclatural code, and use source-aware taxonomic resolution for accepted names, priority or type status.
