Description
Return contaminant mass closure without a sampled-removal term.
Environmental-remediation bookkeeping uses explicit water, soil, dry-mass, concentration and sampling bases. A local mass residual, censored-result bound or supplied target margin does not identify a removal mechanism, establish representativeness or determine an environmentally acceptable contaminant level.
Return contaminant mass closure without a sampled-removal term.
When to use this tool
Use Contaminant Mass Closure Gap when checking the stated remediation measurement, mass/volume balance or support convention.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter initialMass, inflowMass, outflowMass, measuredFinal. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read expectedFinal, residual. Use the output convention below.
Return contaminant mass closure without a sampled-removal term. Require nonnegative masses, outflow <= initial+inflow and measuredFinal >= 0; expectedFinal = initial+inflow-outflow, residual = measured-expected.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| initialMass | Initial Mass | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| inflowMass | Inflow Mass | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| outflowMass | Outflow Mass | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| measuredFinal | Measured Final | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| expectedFinal | Expected Final | Required. Finite number. |
| residual | Signed difference in the direction stated above, with matching units. | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Use one period and mass unit; no actual transformation, reaction, leakage or successful remediation is inferred.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use verified sampling and analytical data, consistent material/unit bases and a complete transport or treatment model; involve qualified environmental professionals for practical or regulatory decisions.
