Description

Locate reused and inconsistent reference-list numbers.

Bibliographic records connect authors, versions, publication dates and locators through explicit identifiers. Literal comparisons and counts help reconcile those records but do not retrieve publications, authenticate sources or establish the quality or meaning of a citation.

Locate reused and inconsistent reference-list numbers.

When to use this tool

Use Citation Reference List Number Reuse Check when checking the stated bibliographic record, locator, date or counting convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter numbers, identifiers. Follow any array-alignment requirements below. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read reusedNumbers, inconsistentNumbers. Use the output convention below.

Locate reused and inconsistent reference-list numbers. Require aligned identifiers/numbers and every number >= 1; reusedNumbers repeats any value, inconsistentNumbers additionally maps it to distinct identifiers.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Reference numbers must be positive whole numbers; duplicate identical references differ from conflicting number reuse, and no document is parsed.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Inspect the original publications and authoritative metadata, and use complete identifier-aware reference management for scholarly attribution and evidence appraisal.
