Probiotic Serving Label Audit
Compare a serving CFU estimate with a label claim using measured concentration and caller-supplied viability retention.
Description
A per-serving viable count combines measured concentration, serving mass and a retained-viability assumption.
A per-serving viable count combines measured concentration, serving mass and a retained-viability assumption. Comparing it with a label claim assesses the declared quantity model rather than proving a product's health effects.1
Compare a serving CFU estimate with a label claim using measured concentration and caller-supplied viability retention.
When to use Probiotic Serving Label Audit
Use this tool to compare a serving CFU estimate with a label claim using measured concentration and caller-supplied viability retention.
Prepare the sample, count, growth or assay measurements requested by this tool. Confirm units, sampling periods and reporting bases; supply independently established comparison criteria where requested.
How to use Probiotic Serving Label Audit and understand its results
- Prepare the sample, count, growth or assay measurements requested by this tool. Confirm units, sampling periods and reporting bases; supply independently established comparison criteria where requested.
- Enter measuredCfuPerGram, servingGrams, retainedViabilityFraction, labelCfuPerServing using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read estimatedCfuPerServing, labelCoverageFraction, meetsLabelClaim. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| measuredCfuPerGram | Measured cfu per gram | number; minimum: 0 | Required |
| servingGrams | Serving grams | number | Required |
| retainedViabilityFraction | Retained viability fraction | number; minimum: 0; maximum: 1 | Required |
| labelCfuPerServing | Label cfu per serving | number | Required |
Enter nonnegative measured CFU/g, positive serving grams and label CFU/serving, with retention in [0,1]. The tool returns the estimated count, estimated-to-label coverage ratio and an inclusive meetsLabelClaim flag. Coverage can exceed one and zero retention gives zero estimated viable count.
estimatedCFU = measuredCFUPerGram × servingGrams × retentionFraction Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| estimatedCfuPerServing | Estimated cfu per serving | number |
| labelCoverageFraction | Label coverage fraction | number |
| meetsLabelClaim | Meets label claim | boolean |

} Limitations and assumptions
Retention is supplied rather than derived from storage or expiry testing. Species identity, assay recovery, product variability and efficacy are not checked; this is not a legal label-compliance determination.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors. A successfully returned false flag is an evaluated outcome; its meaning is explained above.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Observed Decimal Reduction Time: Estimate a measured D value from positive viable counts and exposure time under log-linear death assumptions. For a complementary task, use Water Coliform Sample Compliance: Audit water-sample coliform observations against a supplied per-sample allowance, retaining tested volumes; nondetection is not guaranteed sterility.
