Funds Tracing
Trace funds using the lowest-intermediate-balance method.
Description
Lowest-intermediate-balance tracing limits a supplied traced amount by the lowest running account balance.
Lowest-intermediate-balance tracing limits a supplied traced amount by the lowest running account balance. Legal application requires a separately established tracing timeline.1

When to use Funds Tracing
Use this tool to trace funds using the lowest-intermediate-balance method.
Prepare the documented facts, aligned totals or expected/observed evidence labels requested. Choose applicable requirements and thresholds separately before interpreting a planning screen.
How to use Funds Tracing and understand its results
- Prepare the documented facts, aligned totals or expected/observed evidence labels requested. Choose applicable requirements and thresholds separately before interpreting a planning screen.
- Enter openingAccountBalance, accountTransactions, tracedFundsDeposited using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read closingAccountBalance, lowestIntermediateBalance, traceableAmount. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| openingAccountBalance | Opening account balance | number; minimum: 0 | Required |
| accountTransactions | Signed account transactions | list of number | Required |
| tracedFundsDeposited | Traced funds deposited | number; minimum: 0 | Required |
Enter nonnegative opening/traced amounts and finite signed transactions in time order. Include opening balance in the minimum; return closing/minimum/traceable amount. Empty transactions are allowed.
balance+=transaction; traceable=max(0,min(deposited,lowestBalance)) Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| closingAccountBalance | Closing account balance | number |
| lowestIntermediateBalance | Lowest intermediate balance | number |
| traceableAmount | Lowest-intermediate-balance traceable amount | number; minimum: 0 |

The traced deposit is not automatically added to the account. Negative balances are preserved; no ownership, chronology or legal tracing entitlement is verified.
Numeric inputs, where present, must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Lifestyle Cash-Flow Analysis: Reconcile documented sources and observed uses of funds without inferring misconduct. For a complementary task, use Net-Worth Method: Apply a net-worth method reconciliation to supplied changes and sources.
