Atmospheric Science: Cloud Cover Okta Missing Code Label Tool

Interpret an explicitly declared cloud-cover coding scheme 0..8 oktas and 9 obscured/missing, retaining missing status separately from unused zero fraction.

Description

Map a local cloud-code convention to oktas and a missing flag.

Atmospheric optical and radiation quantities distinguish spectral density, integrated flux, solid-angle response and reporting codes. A local attenuation factor, bin contribution or coverage bound requires compatible geometry and definitions rather than establishing a complete radiative transfer or observed cloud state.

Map a local cloud-code convention to oktas and a missing flag.

When to use this tool

Use Atmospheric Science: Cloud Cover Okta Missing Code Label when checking the stated optical, radiometric, cloud-code or coverage convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter code. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read result. Expand result to inspect the returned fields.

Map a local cloud-code convention to oktas and a missing flag. Require whole code 0..9; codes 0..8 return fraction code/8, while nine returns missing true, oktas -1 and fraction zero placeholders.1

WMO table 2700 uses code nine for obscured sky, rather than a measured zero cloud fraction. This helper instead exposes its own code-nine missing placeholders, so source conventions must be checked.2

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
codeCodeRequired. Safe integer. Calculation range: 0 through 9, inclusive.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
resultReturned calculated value or nested object under the stated output convention.Required. Object.
result.missingLocal code-nine missing convention; WMO cloud-table nine may instead mean obscured sky.Calculated result member: boolean.
result.oktasOktasCalculated result member: number.
result.fractionCode/8 for 0..8; zero placeholder when missing=true.Calculated result member: number.

Limitations and assumptions

  • This tool treats nine as missing; that local mapping must not be substituted for a source code table where nine denotes obscured sky.
  • Outputs are nested inside result. Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use the source-specific observation code table and an appropriate calibrated spectral/atmospheric model for actual cloud or radiative interpretation.
