Trace Gas Reference Mole Gap Tool

Calculate trace gas reference mole gap from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Description

Return a trace-gas mole fraction and reference amount gap.

Atmospheric analytical quantities require explicit sample/background, mole, charge, reference-pressure and reporting bases. A ratio or balance can be consistent numerically without establishing actual composition, sample representativeness, source identity or a health/regulatory interpretation.

Return a trace-gas mole fraction and reference amount gap.

When to use this tool

Use Trace Gas Reference Mole Gap when checking the stated atmospheric chemical measurement, composition or amount convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter sampleMoles, dryAirMoles, suppliedReferenceFraction. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read moleFraction, referenceEquivalentMoles, moleGap. Use the output convention below.

Return a trace-gas mole fraction and reference amount gap. Require dryAirMoles > 0, sampleMoles in [0,dryAirMoles] and referenceFraction in [0,1]; fraction = sample/dryAir, equivalent = dryAir*reference, gap = sample-equivalent.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • The supplied dry-air denominator defines the basis; water exclusion, gas identity and actual concentration are not verified.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use calibrated analytical data, compatible units and complete sampling/speciation information; consult appropriate environmental professionals for exposure or regulatory decisions.
