Aerosol Bin Log Width Tool

Calculate aerosol bin log width from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Description

Return logarithmic diameter-bin width in a supplied base.

Particle and droplet terms depend on size representation, weights, density, drag and logarithmic-bin conventions. A spherical growth or low-Reynolds approximation is a local model term rather than a measured size distribution, composition or health/exposure assessment.

Return logarithmic diameter-bin width in a supplied base.

When to use this tool

Use Aerosol Bin Log Width when checking the stated particle, droplet, drag, growth or bin-basis convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter lowerDiameter, upperDiameter, logBase. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read width. Use the output convention below.

Return logarithmic diameter-bin width in a supplied base. Require lowerDiameter > 0, upper >= lower and logBase > 1; width = ln(upper/lower)/ln(base), using log1p for finite relative width.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
lowerDiameterLower DiameterRequired. Finite number; strictly above 0.
upperDiameterUpper DiameterRequired. Finite number.
logBaseLog BaseRequired. Finite number; strictly above 1.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
widthInterval, bin, geometry or dimension width under the specific convention above.Required. Finite number.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Equal bounds give zero width; no per-log-bin concentration, size distribution or instrument response is computed.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use verified particle measurements and an appropriate complete distribution/transport model with justified material, shape and flow assumptions for atmospheric inference.
