Public Inscription Column Index Tool

Index an explicit public-inscription transcription grid in row-major zero-based output order.

Description

Return a zero-based row-major inscription-grid index.

Art catalogs and inscriptions encode editions, states, suffixes and transcribed lines through explicit notation. Literal tokens and line positions can be reconciled without authenticating an impression, assigning authorship or resolving differences between cataloging authorities. The supplied prefix, separator and numbering convention are part of the input.

Return a zero-based row-major inscription-grid index.

When to use this tool

Use Public Inscription Column Index when checking the stated inscription, edition or catalog-token convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter row, column, columns, origin. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read linearIndex. Use the output convention below.

Return a zero-based row-major inscription-grid index. Require origin zero/one, positive whole columns and row/column within their stated origin bounds; index = (row-origin)*columns+(column-origin), using exact intermediates then numeric output.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • No total row count is supplied; inscription content, column order and physical geometry are not verified.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Consult the original inscription and authoritative catalog for attribution, edition identity and the notation used by the relevant collection.
