Artwork State Edition Order Token Tool

Build an explicit numeric ordering key without inferring an artwork state or edition chronology.

Description

Return a supplied state/edition ordering key.

Art catalogs and inscriptions encode editions, states, suffixes and transcribed lines through explicit notation. Literal tokens and line positions can be reconciled without authenticating an impression, assigning authorship or resolving differences between cataloging authorities. The supplied prefix, separator and numbering convention are part of the input.

Return a supplied state/edition ordering key.

When to use this tool

Use Artwork State Edition Order Token when checking the stated inscription, edition or catalog-token convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter stateOrder, editionOrder, orderBasis. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read key, basis. Use the output convention below.

Return a supplied state/edition ordering key. Require nonnegative whole orders and state-first/edition-first policy; key arranges the two numbers under that policy.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • The key preserves supplied order conventions; no actual print chronology, catalogue sorting rule or authenticity is inferred.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Consult the original inscription and authoritative catalog for attribution, edition identity and the notation used by the relevant collection.
