Description

Parse an alphanumeric prefix beginning with a letter, four year digits, and a decimal sequence separated by hyphens.

An artwork record can distinguish an edition, proof, accession, attribution, or display note. These labels preserve a stated catalog convention; they do not authenticate an object or establish ownership.

Parse an alphanumeric prefix beginning with a letter, four year digits, and a decimal sequence separated by hyphens.

When to use this tool

Use Museum Accession Prefix Year Split when you need to format a supplied art-record detail consistently while retaining its source and qualifiers.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter accession. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read prefix, year, sequence. Use the output convention below.

Limitations and assumptions

  • This is one accession shape; leading sequence zeros are preserved and calendar validity, institution, uniqueness, and object provenance are not checked.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Compare the resulting label with the collection catalog and the institution's documentation conventions.
