Description

Return ideal dry paint thickness and volume loss.

Conservation measurements separate nominal material composition, contact geometry, expansion and mechanical response. A volume fraction or clearance term evaluates supplied properties under a limited model; actual material compatibility, treatment effects and object stability require examination and specialist judgment.

Return ideal dry paint thickness and volume loss.

When to use this tool

Use Paint Film Wet Dry Thickness Factor when checking the stated conservation material, dimensional or mechanical term.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter wetThickness, solidsVolumeFraction, area. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read dryThickness, solidsVolume, lostVolume. Use the output convention below.

Return ideal dry paint thickness and volume loss. Require wetThickness/area >= 0 and solidsVolumeFraction in [0,1]; dryThickness = wet*fraction, solidsVolume multiplies area, lostVolume uses complementary fraction.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • This assumes constant coated area and complete volatile loss; actual curing, surface response and suitable conservation application are not predicted.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use calibrated measurements, representative material tests and qualified conservation/engineering assessment before actual treatment, mounting or handling.
