Description
Return packing opening width, offset and clearance.
Conservation measurements separate nominal material composition, contact geometry, expansion and mechanical response. A volume fraction or clearance term evaluates supplied properties under a limited model; actual material compatibility, treatment effects and object stability require examination and specialist judgment.
Return packing opening width, offset and clearance.
When to use this tool
Use Museum Packing Object Center Offset when checking the stated conservation material, dimensional or mechanical term.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter caseWidth, objectWidth, leftPadding, rightPadding. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read availableWidth, centerOffset, clearance. Use the output convention below.
Return packing opening width, offset and clearance. Require nonnegative widths/padding and caseWidth >= padding sum; available = case-padding, centerOffset = (leftPadding-rightPadding)/2, clearance = available-objectWidth.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| caseWidth | Case Width | Required. Finite number. |
| objectWidth | Object Width | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| leftPadding | Left Padding | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| rightPadding | Right Padding | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| availableWidth | Available Width | Required. Finite number. |
| centerOffset | Center Offset | Required. Finite number. |
| clearance | Signed availableWidth-objectWidth; negative values report insufficient space. | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Negative clearance is retained; this does not design cushioning, verify fit in other dimensions or establish safe transport.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use calibrated measurements, representative material tests and qualified conservation/engineering assessment before actual treatment, mounting or handling.
