Thermoluminescence Dose Rate

Combine supplied attenuated radiation dose components plus cosmic dose and independent component uncertainty; attenuation uncertainties/covariance and dose-rate histories remain caller concerns.

Description

Luminescence dose-rate calculations combine contributions from radiation sources with moisture attenuation.

Luminescence dose-rate calculations combine contributions from radiation sources with moisture attenuation. Independent component uncertainties can be combined separately from the central dose-rate estimate.1

Combine supplied attenuated radiation dose components plus cosmic dose and independent component uncertainty; attenuation uncertainties/covariance and dose-rate histories remain caller concerns.

When to use Thermoluminescence Dose Rate

Use this tool to combine supplied attenuated radiation dose components plus cosmic dose and independent component uncertainty; attenuation uncertainties/covariance and dose-rate histories remain caller concerns.

Prepare the artifact, site or survey measurements and any independently established calibration or model choices. Keep paired observations aligned and confirm units and coordinate conventions.

How to use Thermoluminescence Dose Rate and understand its results

  1. Prepare the artifact, site or survey measurements and any independently established calibration or model choices. Keep paired observations aligned and confirm units and coordinate conventions.
  2. Enter componentDryDoseRatesGyPerKyr, waterAttenuationFactors, componentSigmaGyPerKyr, cosmicDoseRateGyPerKyr, cosmicSigmaGyPerKyr using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read totalEffectiveDoseRateGyPerKyr, independentDoseRateSigmaGyPerKyr. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.

Pair nonnegative dry component rates and sigmas in Gy/kyr with attenuation fractions from zero to one. Supply nonnegative cosmic rate and sigma. Return the sum of attenuated components plus cosmic dose and the quadrature-combined independent sigma. A zero total rate is a valid result here.

Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths.

effectiveDoseRate = cosmic + Σ(dryRate_i attenuation_i); sigma = hypot(cosmicSigma, attenuation_i sigma_i…)

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Attenuation factors are supplied rather than derived from water history. Their uncertainty and component covariance are omitted. This calculates dose rate, not an age; age calculations require a suitable positive dose rate.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use OSL Age: Infer residual-corrected OSL age with independent dose/rate uncertainties, retaining signed residual nondetections; assumes full resetting and constant effective dose rate, not a validated burial age. For a complementary task, use Fission Track Age: Calculate supplied zeta-calibrated fission-track age and independent Poisson specimen-count uncertainty; geometry and reference density are explicit, and annealing/zeta/dosimeter uncertainties are not inferred.
