OSL Age

Infer residual-corrected OSL age with independent dose/rate uncertainties, retaining signed residual nondetections; assumes full resetting and constant effective dose rate, not a validated burial age.

Description

An OSL age scenario divides residual-corrected equivalent dose by effective dose rate.

An OSL age scenario divides residual-corrected equivalent dose by effective dose rate. Residual subtraction can yield a signed nondetection rather than a physically meaningful positive burial age.1

Infer residual-corrected OSL age with independent dose/rate uncertainties, retaining signed residual nondetections; assumes full resetting and constant effective dose rate, not a validated burial age.

When to use OSL Age

Use this tool to infer residual-corrected OSL age with independent dose/rate uncertainties, retaining signed residual nondetections; assumes full resetting and constant effective dose rate, not a validated burial age.

Prepare the artifact, site or survey measurements and any independently established calibration or model choices. Keep paired observations aligned and confirm units and coordinate conventions.

How to use OSL Age and understand its results

  1. Prepare the artifact, site or survey measurements and any independently established calibration or model choices. Keep paired observations aligned and confirm units and coordinate conventions.
  2. Enter equivalentDoseGy, equivalentDoseSigmaGy, residualDoseGy, residualDoseSigmaGy, doseRateGyPerKyr, doseRateSigmaGyPerKyr using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read residualCorrectedOslAgeKyr, independentAgeSigmaKyr. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
equivalentDoseGyEquivalent dose gynumberRequired
equivalentDoseSigmaGyEquivalent dose sigma gynumberRequired
residualDoseGyResidual dose gynumberRequired
residualDoseSigmaGyResidual dose sigma gynumberRequired
doseRateGyPerKyrDose rate gy per kyrnumberRequired
doseRateSigmaGyPerKyrDose rate sigma gy per kyrnumberRequired

Enter nonnegative equivalent and residual doses in Gy and their sigmas, positive rate in Gy/kyr and nonnegative rate sigma. Return the corrected age and independent propagated sigma in kyr. A residual larger than measured equivalent dose is retained as a negative age result.

age = (equivalentDose−residualDose)/doseRate; sigma = hypot[hypot(doseSigma,residualSigma)/rate, age×rateSigma/rate]

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Full resetting and a constant effective dose-rate history are assumptions. Covariance and systematic uncertainty are omitted. Signed results require interpretation and are not certified burial ages.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Thermoluminescence Dose Rate: Combine supplied attenuated radiation dose components plus cosmic dose and independent component uncertainty; attenuation uncertainties/covariance and dose-rate histories remain caller concerns. For a complementary task, use Calibrated Age Intercept Range: Intersect a measured radiocarbon uncertainty band with a supplied piecewise-linear calibration curve, retaining disjoint intervals; not Bayesian calibration, curve uncertainty or an embedded IntCal lookup.
