Excavation Spit Volume
Sum distinct plan-area/thickness excavation cells and subtract independently measured obstructions; not a uniform rectangular box alias or loose-spoil volume.
Description
Excavation volume can be calculated from cells with different plan areas and thicknesses.
Excavation volume can be calculated from cells with different plan areas and thicknesses. Separately subtracting obstructions distinguishes gross cut volume from actual material removed.1
Sum distinct plan-area/thickness excavation cells and subtract independently measured obstructions; not a uniform rectangular box alias or loose-spoil volume.
When to use Excavation Spit Volume
Use this tool to sum distinct plan-area/thickness excavation cells and subtract independently measured obstructions; not a uniform rectangular box alias or loose-spoil volume.
Prepare the artifact, site or survey measurements and any independently established calibration or model choices. Keep paired observations aligned and confirm units and coordinate conventions.
How to use Excavation Spit Volume and understand its results
- Prepare the artifact, site or survey measurements and any independently established calibration or model choices. Keep paired observations aligned and confirm units and coordinate conventions.
- Enter stationPlanAreasM2, excavatedThicknessesM, obstructionVolumeM3 using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read grossSpitVolumeM3, netExcavatedVolumeM3. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| stationPlanAreasM2 | Station plan areas m2 | list of number | Required |
| excavatedThicknessesM | Excavated thicknesses m | list of number | Required |
| obstructionVolumeM3 | Obstruction volume m3 | number | Required |
Pair nonnegative plan areas in m² and excavated thicknesses in m, and supply nonnegative obstruction volume in m³. Obstructions cannot exceed gross volume. Return gross and net in-situ excavation volumes.
Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths.
grossVolume = Σ(area_i thickness_i); netVolume = grossVolume−obstructions Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| grossSpitVolumeM3 | Gross spit volume m3 | number |
| netExcavatedVolumeM3 | Net excavated volume m3 | number |

} Limitations and assumptions
Cells must not double-count the same space. The result does not include loose-spoil bulking, infer geometry between cells or assume a single rectangular trench.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Trench Profile Area: Integrate vertical cut thickness between measured positive-down surface and base profiles on supplied station distances; no coordinate mapping or rectangular area assumption. For a complementary task, use Arbitrary Level Thickness: Partition a measured positive-down depth interval into caller target spits, retaining the final partial level and scale-relative rounding slack; no stratigraphic boundaries inferred.
