Arbitrary Level Thickness

Partition a measured positive-down depth interval into caller target spits, retaining the final partial level and scale-relative rounding slack; no stratigraphic boundaries inferred.

Description

Arbitrary excavation levels subdivide a measured depth interval independently of natural strata.

Arbitrary excavation levels subdivide a measured depth interval independently of natural strata. The final level can be thinner than the requested target rather than extending beyond the excavation endpoint.1

Partition a measured positive-down depth interval into caller target spits, retaining the final partial level and scale-relative rounding slack; no stratigraphic boundaries inferred.

When to use Arbitrary Level Thickness

Use this tool to partition a measured positive-down depth interval into caller target spits, retaining the final partial level and scale-relative rounding slack; no stratigraphic boundaries inferred.

Prepare the artifact, site or survey measurements and any independently established calibration or model choices. Keep paired observations aligned and confirm units and coordinate conventions.

How to use Arbitrary Level Thickness and understand its results

  1. Prepare the artifact, site or survey measurements and any independently established calibration or model choices. Keep paired observations aligned and confirm units and coordinate conventions.
  2. Enter startDepthM, endDepthM, targetLevelThicknessM using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read levelTopDepthsM, levelBottomDepthsM, levelThicknessesM. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
startDepthMStart depth mnumberRequired
endDepthMEnd depth mnumberRequired
targetLevelThicknessMTarget level thickness mnumberRequired

Enter nonnegative positive-down start/end depths in m with end strictly deeper, and positive target thickness. Apply a small scale-relative rounding allowance when computing the ceiling, require 1–10,000 levels and return tops, capped bottoms and positive actual thicknesses. The final partial level is retained.

count ≈ ceil[(end−start)/target]; bottom_i = min(end,top_i+target)

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

No stratigraphic boundaries are inferred. Numerical resolution must support each positive thickness, and arbitrary levels should not be mistaken for geological or cultural layers.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Excavation Spit Volume: Sum distinct plan-area/thickness excavation cells and subtract independently measured obstructions; not a uniform rectangular box alias or loose-spoil volume. For a complementary task, use Trench Profile Area: Integrate vertical cut thickness between measured positive-down surface and base profiles on supplied station distances; no coordinate mapping or rectangular area assumption.
