Transportation Density
Screen finite-trip biomass against stored/supplied oxygen and a caller density cap; no fish welfare guarantee, CO2/ammonia control or live-transport recommendation.
Description
Transport biomass can be limited both by a density ceiling and oxygen available over the trip.
Transport biomass can be limited both by a density ceiling and oxygen available over the trip. Dissolved oxygen contributes an initial reserve above the chosen minimum; continuous supply adds to that reserve.1

When to use Transportation Density
Use this tool to screen finite-trip biomass against stored/supplied oxygen and a caller density cap; no fish welfare guarantee, CO2/ammonia control or live-transport recommendation.
Prepare the cohort, water, feed or equipment measurements for one consistent operating period. Confirm nitrogen reporting bases, dry/wet masses, flow units and supplied design assumptions.
How to use Transportation Density and understand its results
- Prepare the cohort, water, feed or equipment measurements for one consistent operating period. Confirm nitrogen reporting bases, dry/wet masses, flow units and supplied design assumptions.
- Enter transportWaterVolumeM3, initialOxygenMgPerLiter, minimumOxygenMgPerLiter, oxygenSupplyGramsPerHour, tripHours, fishOxygenGramsPerKgHour, callerMaximumDensityKgPerM3 using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read oxygenLimitedBiomassKg, densityLimitedBiomassKg, governingBiomassKg, governingDensityKgPerM3. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| transportWaterVolumeM3 | Transport water volume m3 | number | Required |
| initialOxygenMgPerLiter | Initial oxygen mg per liter | number | Required |
| minimumOxygenMgPerLiter | Minimum oxygen mg per liter | number | Required |
| oxygenSupplyGramsPerHour | Oxygen supply grams per hour | number | Required |
| tripHours | Trip hours | number | Required |
| fishOxygenGramsPerKgHour | Fish oxygen grams per kg hour | number | Required |
| callerMaximumDensityKgPerM3 | Caller maximum density kg per m3 | number | Required |
Enter positive water volume, trip duration and fish oxygen demand, plus nonnegative oxygen concentrations, supply and density ceiling. Initial oxygen must be at least the minimum. Compare oxygen-limited biomass with density ceiling times volume and return their minimum and its density.
oxygenReserveG=(initialMgPerL−minimumMgPerL) × volumeM3; oxygenBiomass=(reserve+supply×hours)/(fishDemand×hours) Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |

| oxygenLimitedBiomassKg | Oxygen limited biomass kg | number |
| densityLimitedBiomassKg | Density limited biomass kg | number |
| governingBiomassKg | Governing biomass kg | number |
| governingDensityKgPerM3 | Governing density kg per m3 | number |

} Limitations and assumptions
Constant demand/supply and a usable oxygen reserve are assumed. CO₂, ammonia, temperature, behavior and oxygen-transfer efficiency are not modeled; this is not a welfare guarantee.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Carbon Dioxide Production: Convert measured respiratory oxygen uptake to CO2 production using caller molar respiratory quotient and mass ratio, adding separate nonrespiratory CO2; not a dissolved-CO2 equilibrium calculation. For a complementary task, use Cannibalism Loss Estimate: Bound possible cannibalism losses using confirmed cases and unexplained missing inventory after other verified losses; does not assign unexplained losses to cannibalism.
