Carbon Dioxide Production

Convert measured respiratory oxygen uptake to CO2 production using caller molar respiratory quotient and mass ratio, adding separate nonrespiratory CO2; not a dissolved-CO2 equilibrium calculation.

Description

Respiratory quotient is a molar CO₂-to-O₂ relation.

Respiratory quotient is a molar CO₂-to-O₂ relation. Converting oxygen mass consumption into CO₂ mass therefore also requires a molecular-mass ratio.1

Convert measured respiratory oxygen uptake to CO2 production using caller molar respiratory quotient and mass ratio, adding separate nonrespiratory CO2; not a dissolved-CO2 equilibrium calculation.

When to use Carbon Dioxide Production

Use this tool to convert measured respiratory oxygen uptake to CO2 production using caller molar respiratory quotient and mass ratio, adding separate nonrespiratory CO2; not a dissolved-CO2 equilibrium calculation.

Prepare the cohort, water, feed or equipment measurements for one consistent operating period. Confirm nitrogen reporting bases, dry/wet masses, flow units and supplied design assumptions.

How to use Carbon Dioxide Production and understand its results

  1. Prepare the cohort, water, feed or equipment measurements for one consistent operating period. Confirm nitrogen reporting bases, dry/wet masses, flow units and supplied design assumptions.
  2. Enter respiratoryOxygenKgPerDay, respiratoryQuotient, co2OxygenMolarMassRatio, otherCo2KgPerDay using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read respiratoryCo2KgPerDay, totalCo2KgPerDay. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
respiratoryOxygenKgPerDayRespiratory oxygen kg per daynumberRequired
respiratoryQuotientRespiratory quotientnumberRequired
co2OxygenMolarMassRatioCo2 oxygen molar mass rationumberRequired
otherCo2KgPerDayOther co2 kg per daynumberRequired

Enter nonnegative oxygen consumption, respiratory quotient and other CO₂ production with a positive molecular-mass ratio. The tool returns respiratory and total CO₂ kg/day without inferring a quotient from feed or species.

respiratoryCO2KgPerDay=oxygenKgPerDay×RQ×CO2toO2MassRatio; total=respiratoryCO2+otherCO2

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

This is a production estimate, not dissolved CO₂ concentration or gas-transfer sizing. Carbonate equilibria, pH and degassing efficiency are excluded.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Transportation Density: Screen finite-trip biomass against stored/supplied oxygen and a caller density cap; no fish welfare guarantee, CO2/ammonia control or live-transport recommendation. For a complementary task, use RAS Water Balance: Solve steady RAS purge/makeup from nitrate production, nitrate-bearing makeup and solute-free evaporation; distinguishes internal circulation from boundary replacement and excludes denitrification.
