Solids Production Rate

Partition supplied dry feed into uneaten and fecal solids then apply mechanical capture; dry-mass basis excludes dissolved organics and biological sludge.

Description

Feed-derived dry solids include uneaten feed and fecal material from the consumed portion.

Feed-derived dry solids include uneaten feed and fecal material from the consumed portion. Applying fecal yield only to consumed feed avoids counting the same feed twice.1

Partition supplied dry feed into uneaten and fecal solids then apply mechanical capture; dry-mass basis excludes dissolved organics and biological sludge.

When to use Solids Production Rate

Use this tool to partition supplied dry feed into uneaten and fecal solids then apply mechanical capture; dry-mass basis excludes dissolved organics and biological sludge.

Prepare the cohort, water, feed or equipment measurements for one consistent operating period. Confirm nitrogen reporting bases, dry/wet masses, flow units and supplied design assumptions.

How to use Solids Production Rate and understand its results

  1. Prepare the cohort, water, feed or equipment measurements for one consistent operating period. Confirm nitrogen reporting bases, dry/wet masses, flow units and supplied design assumptions.
  2. Enter feedKgPerDay, uneatenFeedFraction, consumedFeedDryFecalFraction, captureFraction using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read uneatenSolidsKgPerDay, fecalSolidsKgPerDay, totalSolidsKgPerDay, capturedSolidsKgPerDay. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
feedKgPerDayFeed kg per daynumberRequired
uneatenFeedFractionUneaten feed fractionnumberRequired
consumedFeedDryFecalFractionConsumed feed dry fecal fractionnumberRequired
captureFractionCapture fractionnumberRequired

Enter nonnegative feed kg/day and fractions from zero through one. The tool separates uneaten and fecal solids, sums production and applies the supplied capture fraction. All mass rates are dry kg/day on the same basis.

uneaten=feed×uneatenFraction; fecal=feed×(1−uneatenFraction)×fecalYield; captured=(uneaten+fecal)×captureFraction

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Dissolved waste, water in sludge and later mineralization are excluded. Supplied fractions determine the estimate rather than a species-specific digestibility or filter model.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Drum Filter Sizing: Size effective drum-filter area from calibrated hydraulic/solids fluxes and available duty; backwashing, mesh capture and vendor ratings are supplied externally. For a complementary task, use Clarifier Sizing: Size an ideal circular clarifier against caller hydraulic and solids loadings and report detention; settling performance, inlet hydraulics and short circuiting are external.
