Drum Filter Sizing

Size effective drum-filter area from calibrated hydraulic/solids fluxes and available duty; backwashing, mesh capture and vendor ratings are supplied externally.

Description

A drum filter can be limited by hydraulic flux or solids loading.

A drum filter can be limited by hydraulic flux or solids loading. A productive duty fraction enlarges installed area to compensate for unavailable operating time.1

Size effective drum-filter area from calibrated hydraulic/solids fluxes and available duty; backwashing, mesh capture and vendor ratings are supplied externally.

When to use Drum Filter Sizing

Use this tool to size effective drum-filter area from calibrated hydraulic/solids fluxes and available duty; backwashing, mesh capture and vendor ratings are supplied externally.

Prepare the cohort, water, feed or equipment measurements for one consistent operating period. Confirm nitrogen reporting bases, dry/wet masses, flow units and supplied design assumptions.

How to use Drum Filter Sizing and understand its results

  1. Prepare the cohort, water, feed or equipment measurements for one consistent operating period. Confirm nitrogen reporting bases, dry/wet masses, flow units and supplied design assumptions.
  2. Enter flowM3PerHour, solidsLoadKgPerHour, calibratedHydraulicFluxM3PerM2Hour, calibratedSolidsFluxKgPerM2Hour, availableDutyFraction using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read hydraulicAreaM2, solidsAreaM2, installedEffectiveAreaM2. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.

Provide nonnegative flow and dry-solids load, positive allowable hydraulic and solids fluxes, and duty fraction greater than zero through one. Return both limiting areas and their duty-adjusted maximum. Zero flow and zero solids give zero required area.

hydraulicArea=flow/hydraulicFlux; solidsArea=solidsLoad/solidsFlux; installedArea=max(hydraulicArea,solidsArea)/dutyFraction

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Flux ratings and duty are caller design assumptions. Mesh retention, backwash water, head loss and vendor geometry are not simulated.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Solids Production Rate: Partition supplied dry feed into uneaten and fecal solids then apply mechanical capture; dry-mass basis excludes dissolved organics and biological sludge. For a complementary task, use Clarifier Sizing: Size an ideal circular clarifier against caller hydraulic and solids loadings and report detention; settling performance, inlet hydraulics and short circuiting are external.
