Ozone Dose

Balance applied ozone, gas transfer and supplied instantaneous water demand; ideal residual excludes decay/contact kinetics and is not a fish-safe operating dose.

Description

An ozone mass balance separates transferred ozone from untransferred gas and a supplied water demand.

An ozone mass balance separates transferred ozone from untransferred gas and a supplied water demand. Residual concentration is clamped at zero when demand consumes all transferred ozone.1

Balance applied ozone, gas transfer and supplied instantaneous water demand; ideal residual excludes decay/contact kinetics and is not a fish-safe operating dose.

When to use Ozone Dose

Use this tool to balance applied ozone, gas transfer and supplied instantaneous water demand; ideal residual excludes decay/contact kinetics and is not a fish-safe operating dose.

Prepare the cohort, water, feed or equipment measurements for one consistent operating period. Confirm nitrogen reporting bases, dry/wet masses, flow units and supplied design assumptions.

How to use Ozone Dose and understand its results

  1. Prepare the cohort, water, feed or equipment measurements for one consistent operating period. Confirm nitrogen reporting bases, dry/wet masses, flow units and supplied design assumptions.
  2. Enter waterFlowM3PerHour, appliedOzoneGramsPerHour, gasTransferFraction, waterDemandMgPerLiter using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read transferredDoseMgPerLiter, idealPostDemandResidualMgPerLiter, untransferredOzoneGramsPerHour. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
waterFlowM3PerHourWater flow m3 per hournumberRequired
appliedOzoneGramsPerHourApplied ozone grams per hournumberRequired
gasTransferFractionGas transfer fractionnumberRequired
waterDemandMgPerLiterWater demand mg per liternumberRequired

Enter positive flow, nonnegative applied ozone and demand, and a transfer fraction from zero through one. Calculate transferred concentration, the post-demand residual proxy and untransferred g/hour. The unit conversion uses 1 g/m³ = 1 mg/L.

transferredMgPerL=appliedGPerHour×transferFraction/flowM3PerHour; residual=max(0,transferred−demand)

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

This does not model gas contacting, decay, bromate formation or safe exposure. A mass-balance residual is not a measured disinfectant concentration or recommended dose.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use UV Dose Calculator Aquaculture: Integrate sampled trajectory UV irradiance attenuated by caller transmittance per reference path length; mW·s/cm² yields mJ/cm², not reactor validated reduction-equivalent dose or pathogen kill. For a complementary task, use Nitrification Rate: Measure net TAN disappearance and active-area-normalized rate across parallel streams; negative net removal is preserved and TAN disappearance alone does not prove nitrification.
