Net Pen Mesh Opening Area Tool

Ideal square knotless mesh cells; excludes knots, deformation and fouling.

Description

Return square net-cell opening area.

Tank geometry, exchange and equipment budgets use explicit volume, flow, mixing and efficiency assumptions. Ideal complete mixing differs from replacing distinct water portions, and energy usage differs from power. Nominal calculations do not establish actual oxygenation, animal welfare or safe installation.

Return square net-cell opening area.

When to use this tool

Use Net Pen Mesh Opening Area when checking the stated aquaculture geometry, exchange or equipment term.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter pitch, twineDiameter, cells. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read clearWidth, openArea, openFraction. Use the output convention below.

Return square net-cell opening area. Require pitch > 0, twineDiameter within pitch and nonnegative whole cells; clearWidth = pitch-twine, openArea = cells*clearWidth², openFraction = clearWidth²/pitch².1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input

Limitations and assumptions

  • This assumes square projected cells; mesh angle, deformation, flow resistance, containment and species suitability are not assessed.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Verify actual tank geometry, mixing and equipment performance, and obtain qualified aquaculture/engineering advice for operation and safety.
