Ice Requirement Harvest

Estimate melting ice at 0°C required for nonfreezing harvest cooling plus caller environmental heat load; excludes freezing and ice warming, with no food-safety or holding-time guarantee.

Description

Ice demand for nonfreezing cooling includes the product's sensible heat and an additional caller heat load.

Ice demand for nonfreezing cooling includes the product's sensible heat and an additional caller heat load. Here ice starts at 0°C and its useful cooling is attributed to melting.1

Estimate melting ice at 0°C required for nonfreezing harvest cooling plus caller environmental heat load; excludes freezing and ice warming, with no food-safety or holding-time guarantee.

When to use Ice Requirement Harvest

Use this tool to estimate melting ice at 0°C required for nonfreezing harvest cooling plus caller environmental heat load; excludes freezing and ice warming, with no food-safety or holding-time guarantee.

Prepare the cohort, water, feed or equipment measurements for one consistent operating period. Confirm nitrogen reporting bases, dry/wet masses, flow units and supplied design assumptions.

How to use Ice Requirement Harvest and understand its results

  1. Prepare the cohort, water, feed or equipment measurements for one consistent operating period. Confirm nitrogen reporting bases, dry/wet masses, flow units and supplied design assumptions.
  2. Enter harvestMassKg, initialProductTemperatureC, targetProductTemperatureC, productSpecificHeatKjPerKgK, additionalHeatLoadKj, iceLatentHeatKjPerKg, usefulIceCoolingFraction using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read totalCoolingLoadKj, requiredIceKg, iceProductMassRatio. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.

Enter positive harvest mass, product specific heat, ice latent heat and useful fraction greater than zero through one. Additional load is nonnegative; target temperature must be nonnegative and no warmer than the initial product. Return cooling load, ice mass and ice-to-product mass ratio.

loadKJ=mass×specificHeat×(initialC−targetC)+additionalLoad; iceKg=load/(latentHeat×usefulFraction)

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Freezing the product, warming subzero ice, insulation kinetics and holding duration are excluded. No food-safety or shelf-life conclusion follows from the calculated mass.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Cold Storage Requirement: Estimate cold-room volume from packed product density and caller usable fraction with access/airflow already included; not refrigeration load or shelf-life certification. For a complementary task, use RAS Energy Balance: Combine equipment electric use and heat-to-water fractions with heat losses/recovery and heater COP; excludes cooling energy, transient temperatures and double-counted heat-recovery electricity.
