RAS Energy Balance

Combine equipment electric use and heat-to-water fractions with heat losses/recovery and heater COP; excludes cooling energy, transient temperatures and double-counted heat-recovery electricity.

Description

Equipment electricity and useful water heat are different accounting quantities.

Equipment electricity and useful water heat are different accounting quantities. An equipment load may partly heat the water, while a heater supplies only the remaining modeled heat deficit.1

Combine equipment electric use and heat-to-water fractions with heat losses/recovery and heater COP; excludes cooling energy, transient temperatures and double-counted heat-recovery electricity.

When to use RAS Energy Balance

Use this tool to combine equipment electric use and heat-to-water fractions with heat losses/recovery and heater COP; excludes cooling energy, transient temperatures and double-counted heat-recovery electricity.

Prepare the cohort, water, feed or equipment measurements for one consistent operating period. Confirm nitrogen reporting bases, dry/wet masses, flow units and supplied design assumptions.

How to use RAS Energy Balance and understand its results

  1. Prepare the cohort, water, feed or equipment measurements for one consistent operating period. Confirm nitrogen reporting bases, dry/wet masses, flow units and supplied design assumptions.
  2. Enter equipmentPowersKw, dailyOperatingHours, heatToWaterFractions, waterHeatLossKwhPerDay, heatRecoveryKwhPerDay, heaterCop using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read equipmentElectricityKwhPerDay, equipmentHeatToWaterKwhPerDay, heaterElectricityKwhPerDay, totalElectricityKwhPerDay, heatSurplusKwhPerDay. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.

Enter aligned nonempty equipment power, daily runtime and heat-fraction lists. Power and heat loads are nonnegative, hours lie in 0–24, heat fractions in 0–1 and heater COP is positive. Return equipment electricity, water heat, heater electricity, total electricity and surplus heat.

Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths.

equipmentEnergy=Σpower×hours; waterHeat=Σpower×hours×heatFraction; heaterElectric=max(0,loss−waterHeat−recovery)/COP

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

All quantities refer to one day in kWh where applicable. Surplus heat does not add a cooling electricity load; recovery electricity must be accounted for separately if relevant.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use RAS Water Balance: Solve steady RAS purge/makeup from nitrate production, nitrate-bearing makeup and solute-free evaporation; distinguishes internal circulation from boundary replacement and excludes denitrification. For a complementary task, use Cold Storage Requirement: Estimate cold-room volume from packed product density and caller usable fraction with access/airflow already included; not refrigeration load or shelf-life certification.
