Cage Mesh Opening Measurement

Describe a square cage mesh opening from center-to-center strand pitch and strand width, without selecting a species-specific mesh size.

Description

Calculate nominal clear square mesh opening from supplied pitch and strand width.

Aquaculture records distinguish gross harvest, tare, retained water, sample expansion, feed withdrawal and recorded live counts. Delivered feed differs from ingestion, and nominal mesh geometry differs from behavior under load. Local mass, depth and energy terms do not establish animal welfare, water quality or suitable stocking.

Calculate nominal clear square mesh opening from supplied pitch and strand width.

When to use this tool

Use Cage Mesh Opening Measurement when you already have measuredPitchMillimeters, strandWidthMillimeters and need to calculate nominal clear square mesh opening from supplied pitch and strand width.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter measuredPitchMillimeters, strandWidthMillimeters. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read clearOpeningMillimeters, squareOpeningAreaSquareMillimeters. Use the output convention below.

Require pitch>=strandWidth>=0; opening=pitch-strand and square area=opening² in mm².1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Pitch is not already clear opening. This square geometry does not account for knots, deformation, mesh orientation, retention behavior or safe cage design.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Review original weighing, sample, feed, water and equipment records. Use the complete veterinary, biological and engineering assessment for real operation; local record checks do not determine appropriate management or safe handling.
