Sealed Brood Area Population Estimate

Estimate sealed cells and expected viable emergence from disjoint measured brood areas and caller cell-density/viability calibration; not a fixed frame population lookup.

Description

Sealed-brood area can be converted to cell inventory using a measured cell density.

Sealed-brood area can be converted to cell inventory using a measured cell density. A separate viable-emergence fraction distinguishes occupied brood cells from expected emerging workers.1

Estimate sealed cells and expected viable emergence from disjoint measured brood areas and caller cell-density/viability calibration; not a fixed frame population lookup.

When to use Sealed Brood Area Population Estimate

Use this tool to estimate sealed cells and expected viable emergence from disjoint measured brood areas and caller cell-density/viability calibration; not a fixed frame population lookup.

Prepare the hive, sample or operating measurements and any supplied target values. Confirm units, timing and whether counts or masses refer to the same population or batch.

How to use Sealed Brood Area Population Estimate and understand its results

  1. Prepare the hive, sample or operating measurements and any supplied target values. Confirm units, timing and whether counts or masses refer to the same population or batch.
  2. Enter sealedAreasCm2, cellsPerCm2, viableEmergenceFractions using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read estimatedSealedCells, expectedEmergingWorkers. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.

viableEmergenceFractionsViable emergence fractionslist of numberRequired

Pair nonnegative disjoint brood areas in cm² with positive cell densities and viability fractions in [0,1]. Return total estimated sealed cells and viability-weighted expected emergence. Expected counts may be fractional.

Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths.

cells_i = area_i × cellsPerCm²_i; expectedWorkers = Σcells_i viableFraction_i

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Areas, cell density and viability are supplied calibration. No fixed frame population is assumed, and the model does not diagnose brood health or account for overlapping measured areas.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Deep Frame Comb Area: Calculate usable deep-frame face area after uniform excluded edges with caller dimensions and one/two sides; repeated medium/shallow aliases are not implemented. For a complementary task, use Population Growth From Laying Rate Estimator: Project delayed brood cohorts into expected adult population with caller development lag and conditional survival; no embedded worker-development duration, swarming or migration model.
