Post Treatment Mite Drop Check Tool

Compare exposure-normalized mite-drop observations before/after an intervention with supplied background; this is a monitoring contrast, not causal treatment efficacy or evidence of colony mite clearance.

Description

Mite-drop monitoring compares counts per observed day before and after an intervention.

Mite-drop monitoring compares counts per observed day before and after an intervention. Removing a supplied background rate changes that contrast but does not isolate a causal treatment effect.1

When to use Post Treatment Mite Drop Check Tool

Use this tool to compare exposure-normalized mite-drop observations before/after an intervention with supplied background; this is a monitoring contrast, not causal treatment efficacy or evidence of colony mite clearance.

Prepare the hive, sample or operating measurements and any supplied target values. Confirm units, timing and whether counts or masses refer to the same population or batch.

How to use Post Treatment Mite Drop Check Tool and understand its results

  1. Prepare the hive, sample or operating measurements and any supplied target values. Confirm units, timing and whether counts or masses refer to the same population or batch.
  2. Enter beforeMiteDrops, beforeExposureDays, afterMiteDrops, afterExposureDays, backgroundMiteDropsPerDay using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read beforeDropsPerDay, afterDropsPerDay, backgroundCorrectedDropReductionFraction. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.

beforeExposureDaysBefore exposure dayslist of numberRequired
afterMiteDropsAfter mite dropslist of numberRequired
afterExposureDaysAfter exposure dayslist of numberRequired
backgroundMiteDropsPerDayBackground mite drops per daynumberRequired

Pair nonnegative integer before/after counts with positive exposure days separately, and supply a nonnegative background rate. Pool each period by total counts over total days and require positive background-corrected before rate. Return raw rates and signed reduction; values below zero or above one are retained.

Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths.

reduction = 1−(afterRate−background)/(beforeRate−background)

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

The contrast is not a treatment efficacy estimate or proof of colony clearance. Background, seasonal change, counting uncertainty and intervention attribution are outside the calculation.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Varroa Infestation Percent Alcohol Wash: Compute pooled wash mite count per 100 bees with caller recovery-calibration bounds; multiple mites per host are allowed, so this is not a binomial host-infection probability or treatment threshold. For a complementary task, use Hive Weight Alert Delta Monitoring: Monitor interval hive-weight changes after supplied external loading/removal corrections against caller strict delta threshold; not automatic swarm, forage or theft identification.
