Comb Cell Diameter Worker Drone Checker

Screen comb diameters against caller worker/drone bands; codes 0 neither, 1 worker, 2 drone, 3 ambiguous overlap, without identifying brood occupants.

Description

Measured comb-cell diameters can overlap supplied worker and drone reference bands.

Measured comb-cell diameters can overlap supplied worker and drone reference bands. Preserving an overlap code avoids forcing a classification when both bands fit.1

Screen comb diameters against caller worker/drone bands; codes 0 neither, 1 worker, 2 drone, 3 ambiguous overlap, without identifying brood occupants.

When to use Comb Cell Diameter Worker Drone Checker

Use this tool to screen comb diameters against caller worker/drone bands; codes 0 neither, 1 worker, 2 drone, 3 ambiguous overlap, without identifying brood occupants.

Prepare the hive, sample or operating measurements and any supplied target values. Confirm units, timing and whether counts or masses refer to the same population or batch.

How to use Comb Cell Diameter Worker Drone Checker and understand its results

  1. Prepare the hive, sample or operating measurements and any supplied target values. Confirm units, timing and whether counts or masses refer to the same population or batch.
  2. Enter cellDiametersMm, workerDiameterBoundsMm, droneDiameterBoundsMm using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read classificationCodes. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
cellDiametersMmCell diameters mmlist of numberRequired
workerDiameterBoundsMmWorker diameter bounds mmlist of numberRequired
droneDiameterBoundsMmDrone diameter bounds mmlist of numberRequired

Enter nonempty positive diameters in mm and two ordered positive bounds for each reference band. Both bounds are inclusive. Return codes zero for neither, one for worker only, two for drone only and three for overlap.

code = 1 if diameter in worker band + 2 if diameter in drone band

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Bands are caller calibration, not universal morphology constants. Diameter does not identify actual cell occupants or brood viability.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Bee Space 9MM Compliance Checker: Audit measured bee-space gaps against a caller manufacturing band; historical 9 mm route name does not impose a universal biological or regulatory standard. For a complementary task, use Queen Excluder Slats Spacing Checker: Screen excluder gaps against measured worker maximum/queen minimum widths; sample selectivity is not a universal morphology rule or guarantee that bees pass in practice.
