Agriculture Water Productivity
Calculate marketable output per independently measured total consumptive blue/green water, retaining source share; withdrawals/recycled water are not automatically counted as consumption.
Description
Physical water productivity compares marketable output with consumed water.
Physical water productivity compares marketable output with consumed water. Blue and green consumption are separate accounting sources, distinct from withdrawals that may return or be reused.1
Calculate marketable output per independently measured total consumptive blue/green water, retaining source share; withdrawals/recycled water are not automatically counted as consumption.
When to use Agriculture Water Productivity
Use this tool to calculate marketable output per independently measured total consumptive blue/green water, retaining source share; withdrawals/recycled water are not automatically counted as consumption.
Prepare the field, crop, soil or material measurements for the intended period. Confirm units, dry/wet bases and supplied parameters; keep paired observations aligned.
How to use Agriculture Water Productivity and understand its results
- Prepare the field, crop, soil or material measurements for the intended period. Confirm units, dry/wet bases and supplied parameters; keep paired observations aligned.
- Enter marketableHarvestKg, consumedBlueWaterM3, consumedGreenWaterM3 using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read totalConsumedWaterM3, physicalConsumedWaterProductivityKgPerM3, blueWaterShareOfConsumption. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| marketableHarvestKg | Marketable harvest kg | number | Required |
| consumedBlueWaterM3 | Consumed blue water m3 | number | Required |
| consumedGreenWaterM3 | Consumed green water m3 | number | Required |
Enter nonnegative marketable harvest kg and nonnegative blue and green consumed m³ with positive combined consumption. Return total consumed water, kg/m³ productivity and blue share of consumption. Zero harvest is valid and gives zero productivity.
productivity = harvestKg/(blueM³+greenM³); blueShare = blue/(blue+green) Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| totalConsumedWaterM3 | Total consumed water m3 | number |
| physicalConsumedWaterProductivityKgPerM3 | Physical consumed water productivity kg per m3 | number |
| blueWaterShareOfConsumption | Blue water share of consumption | number |

Consumption must be measured or independently estimated on a matched product and period basis. Withdrawals are not automatically consumption, and the result does not establish water scarcity or ecological impact.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Agriculture Water Footprint: Report declared blue/green consumption plus caller concentration-based grey dilution equivalent per product tonne; grey water is a model pollution metric, not actual withdrawn/consumed water or a discharge permission. For a complementary task, use Agriculture Irrigation Efficiency: Audit independently measured applied/storage/runoff/drainage water balance, leaving unaccounted water explicit rather than calling all loss evaporation; not a uniformity or pump efficiency alias.
