Agriculture Water Footprint
Report declared blue/green consumption plus caller concentration-based grey dilution equivalent per product tonne; grey water is a model pollution metric, not actual withdrawn/consumed water or a discharge permission.
Description
A declared water footprint can combine blue and green consumption with a grey dilution equivalent.
A declared water footprint can combine blue and green consumption with a grey dilution equivalent. Grey water is a pollution-accounting volume based on concentrations, not an observed quantity physically consumed.1
Report declared blue/green consumption plus caller concentration-based grey dilution equivalent per product tonne; grey water is a model pollution metric, not actual withdrawn/consumed water or a discharge permission.
When to use Agriculture Water Footprint
Use this tool to report declared blue/green consumption plus caller concentration-based grey dilution equivalent per product tonne; grey water is a model pollution metric, not actual withdrawn/consumed water or a discharge permission.
Prepare the field, crop, soil or material measurements for the intended period. Confirm units, dry/wet bases and supplied parameters; keep paired observations aligned.
How to use Agriculture Water Footprint and understand its results
- Prepare the field, crop, soil or material measurements for the intended period. Confirm units, dry/wet bases and supplied parameters; keep paired observations aligned.
- Enter consumedBlueWaterM3, consumedGreenWaterM3, leachedPollutantMassKg, callerMaximumPollutantKgPerM3, naturalBackgroundPollutantKgPerM3, marketableProductTonnes using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read modelGreyDilutionWaterM3, declaredTotalWaterFootprintM3PerTonne, blueGreenConsumptionM3PerTonne. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| consumedBlueWaterM3 | Consumed blue water m3 | number | Required |
| consumedGreenWaterM3 | Consumed green water m3 | number | Required |
| leachedPollutantMassKg | Leached pollutant mass kg | number | Required |
| callerMaximumPollutantKgPerM3 | Caller maximum pollutant kg per m3 | number | Required |
| naturalBackgroundPollutantKgPerM3 | Natural background pollutant kg per m3 | number | Required |
| marketableProductTonnes | Marketable product tonnes | number | Required |
Enter nonnegative consumption and leached pollutant mass, positive product tonnes and maximum concentration, and nonnegative background in kg/m³. Maximum must exceed background. Return modeled grey volume, declared total m³/tonne and blue-plus-green consumption m³/tonne separately.
greyM³ = pollutantKg/(maximumConcentration−background); totalPerTonne = (blue+green+grey)/productTonnes Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| modelGreyDilutionWaterM3 | Model grey dilution water m3 | number |
| declaredTotalWaterFootprintM3PerTonne | Declared total water footprint m3 per tonne | number |
| blueGreenConsumptionM3PerTonne | Blue green consumption m3 per tonne | number |

} Limitations and assumptions
Concentrations and accounting boundary are supplied assumptions, not permitted discharge limits established by the tool. The grey equivalent must not be interpreted as actual withdrawals or consumption.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Agriculture Water Productivity: Calculate marketable output per independently measured total consumptive blue/green water, retaining source share; withdrawals/recycled water are not automatically counted as consumption. For a complementary task, use Agriculture Nitrogen Footprint: Audit declared N input/product/soil-stock balance and signed unaccounted residual per product mass; residual is not automatically environmental emission, and above-unit recovery may reveal stock depletion or omitted inputs.
