Agriculture Storage Loss Percentage

Infer storage dry-matter retention from an explicitly assumed conserved ash tracer, separating moisture-driven wet-mass ratio; ash loss/addition violates the model and apparent negative loss is retained as diagnostic.

Description

An ash-tracer storage model infers dry-matter retention only if ash is conserved.

An ash-tracer storage model infers dry-matter retention only if ash is conserved. Moisture changes then alter wet mass separately from the inferred dry-matter loss.1

Infer storage dry-matter retention from an explicitly assumed conserved ash tracer, separating moisture-driven wet-mass ratio; ash loss/addition violates the model and apparent negative loss is retained as diagnostic.

When to use Agriculture Storage Loss Percentage

Use this tool to infer storage dry-matter retention from an explicitly assumed conserved ash tracer, separating moisture-driven wet-mass ratio; ash loss/addition violates the model and apparent negative loss is retained as diagnostic.

Prepare the field, crop, soil or material measurements for the intended period. Confirm units, dry/wet bases and supplied parameters; keep paired observations aligned.

How to use Agriculture Storage Loss Percentage and understand its results

  1. Prepare the field, crop, soil or material measurements for the intended period. Confirm units, dry/wet bases and supplied parameters; keep paired observations aligned.
  2. Enter initialDryAshFraction, finalDryAshFraction, initialWetBasisMoistureFraction, finalWetBasisMoistureFraction using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read ashTracerDryMatterRetentionFraction, signedDryMatterLossPercent, modelFinalInitialWetMassRatio. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
initialDryAshFractionInitial dry ash fractionnumberRequired
finalDryAshFractionFinal dry ash fractionnumberRequired
initialWetBasisMoistureFractionInitial wet basis moisture fractionnumberRequired
finalWetBasisMoistureFractionFinal wet basis moisture fractionnumberRequired

Enter initial/final dry ash fractions greater than zero and at most one, and wet-basis moisture fractions in [0,1). Return ash-tracer retention, signed dry-matter loss and modeled final/initial wet-mass ratio retention×(1−initialMoisture)/(1−finalMoisture). Values above one and negative losses are retained.

dryRetention = initialDryAshFraction/finalDryAshFraction; lossPercent = 100(1−retention)

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Ash addition or removal invalidates the tracer assumption. Apparent negative loss is diagnostic rather than automatically clamped. The tool does not measure inventory loss directly or assess storage quality.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Agriculture Harvest Moisture Adjustment: Account harvested lots with differing wet-basis moisture and explicitly retained dry matter before reporting-basis mass; unlike standalone moisture conversion, actual graded/handling dry-matter loss is separately conserved. For a complementary task, use Agriculture Soil Organic Matter Percentage: Report blank/mineral-corrected soil loss-on-ignition as a caller protocol organic-matter proxy, retaining negative nondetections; does not equate every thermal loss to organic carbon or embed a carbon-to-OM factor.
