Agriculture Stocking Rate
Account observed grazing exposure and caller animal-unit equivalents by actual area/time, not inferred forage carrying capacity or a fixed head/ha welfare limit.
Description
Stocking exposure combines animals, time and area.
Stocking exposure combines animals, time and area. Animal-unit factors allow unlike groups to be accounted on a supplied equivalence basis without confusing exposure with forage capacity.1
Account observed grazing exposure and caller animal-unit equivalents by actual area/time, not inferred forage carrying capacity or a fixed head/ha welfare limit.
When to use Agriculture Stocking Rate
Use this tool to account observed grazing exposure and caller animal-unit equivalents by actual area/time, not inferred forage carrying capacity or a fixed head/ha welfare limit.
Prepare the field, crop, soil or material measurements for the intended period. Confirm units, dry/wet bases and supplied parameters; keep paired observations aligned.
How to use Agriculture Stocking Rate and understand its results
- Prepare the field, crop, soil or material measurements for the intended period. Confirm units, dry/wet bases and supplied parameters; keep paired observations aligned.
- Enter herdAnimalCounts, grazingDurationsDays, relativeAnimalUnitFactors, grazedAreaHa, accountingPeriodDays using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read totalAnimalDays, totalAnimalUnitDays, animalUnitDaysPerHa, meanAnimalUnitsPerHaOverPeriod. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| herdAnimalCounts | Herd animal counts | list of number | Required |
| grazingDurationsDays | Grazing durations days | list of number | Required |
| relativeAnimalUnitFactors | Relative animal unit factors | list of number | Required |
| grazedAreaHa | Grazed area ha | number | Required |
| accountingPeriodDays | Accounting period days | number | Required |
Pair nonnegative integer herd counts with positive grazing days and nonnegative animal-unit factors. Supply positive grazed hectares and accounting days; no group duration may exceed the period. Return total animal days, animal-unit days, AU-days/ha and period-mean AU/ha.
Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths.
animalUnitDays = Σ(count_i duration_i factor_i); meanAU/ha = totalAUdays/(area × periodDays) Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| totalAnimalDays | Total animal days | number |
| totalAnimalUnitDays | Total animal unit days | number |
| animalUnitDaysPerHa | Animal unit days per ha | number |
| meanAnimalUnitsPerHaOverPeriod | Mean animal units per ha over period | number |

} Limitations and assumptions
Factors and grazing records are supplied. The tool does not infer available forage, sustainable capacity or an animal-welfare stocking limit.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Agriculture Pasture Carrying Capacity: Screen full-period animal counts from measured heterogeneous pasture forage with caller usable fraction/daily intake; excludes regrowth, nutrients and animal welfare and differs from generic population or aquaculture capacity models. For a complementary task, use Agriculture Plant Population Per Hectare: Estimate field stand/productive plant equivalents from sampled row exposure with unequal spacing and explicit productive share; does not assume all planted seed positions establish or duplicate fixed-plot tree expansion.
