Agriculture Compost C N Ratio

Conserve dry carbon/nitrogen across wet compost components to a mixture **mass** C/N, not mean component ratios or atomic bone-collagen C/N; no microbial adequacy or compost recipe.

Description

Compost mixture C/N is a ratio of total carbon mass to total nitrogen mass.

Compost mixture C/N is a ratio of total carbon mass to total nitrogen mass. Moisture and unequal ingredient amounts prevent an average of ingredient ratios from giving the same result.1

Conserve dry carbon/nitrogen across wet compost components to a mixture **mass** C/N, not mean component ratios or atomic bone-collagen C/N; no microbial adequacy or compost recipe.

When to use Agriculture Compost C N Ratio

Use this tool to conserve dry carbon/nitrogen across wet compost components to a mixture **mass** C/N, not mean component ratios or atomic bone-collagen C/N; no microbial adequacy or compost recipe.

Prepare the field, crop, soil or material measurements for the intended period. Confirm units, dry/wet bases and supplied parameters; keep paired observations aligned.

How to use Agriculture Compost C N Ratio and understand its results

  1. Prepare the field, crop, soil or material measurements for the intended period. Confirm units, dry/wet bases and supplied parameters; keep paired observations aligned.
  2. Enter componentWetMassesKg, componentDryMatterFractions, dryCarbonMassFractions, dryNitrogenMassFractions using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read totalDeclaredCarbonKg, totalDeclaredNitrogenKg, mixtureCarbonNitrogenMassRatio. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.

Pair nonnegative wet masses with dry-matter, dry-carbon and dry-nitrogen fractions in [0,1]. Dry-basis carbon and nitrogen fractions may not sum above one for any component. Total nitrogen must be positive. Return total declared carbon and nitrogen kg and their mass ratio.

Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths.

carbonKg = ΣwetKg_i dryFraction_i carbonFraction_i; nitrogenKg = ΣwetKg_i dryFraction_i nitrogenFraction_i

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

This is mass C/N, not atomic C/N. Assay basis and component inventories are supplied; microbial availability, compost suitability and process outcomes are not inferred.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Agriculture Soil Organic Matter Percentage: Report blank/mineral-corrected soil loss-on-ignition as a caller protocol organic-matter proxy, retaining negative nondetections; does not equate every thermal loss to organic carbon or embed a carbon-to-OM factor. For a complementary task, use Agriculture Manure Nutrient Content: Account declared independent dry-basis manure nutrient components from wet mass and model first-year availability; elemental/oxide bases must be consistent and release fractions are not nutrient sufficiency recommendations.
