Description
Calculate usable respiration-observation time as a share of resting observation time.
Zoological records separate specimen identity, preparation, anatomical side, behavioral codes and the sources assigning those labels. A specimen name or status is a claim with provenance, while an observation share depends on a stated denominator. Preserving these conventions helps compare records without treating a transcription or visibility count as taxonomic identification or an animal-health assessment.
Calculate usable respiration-observation time as a share of resting observation time.
When to use this tool
Use Animal Resting Respiration Observation Share when you already have usableRespirationMinutes, restObservationMinutes and need to calculate usable respiration-observation time as a share of resting observation time.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter usableRespirationMinutes, restObservationMinutes. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read fraction, remainder. Use the output convention below.
Require restObservationMinutes>0 and usableRespirationMinutes in [0,rest]; return usable/rest and rest-usable.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| usableRespirationMinutes | Usable Respiration Minutes | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| restObservationMinutes | Positive resting observation time in minutes; denominator of the usable-time share. | Required. Finite number; strictly above 0. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| fraction | Fraction | Required. Finite number. |
| remainder | Remainder | Required. Finite number. |
{
"input": {
"usableRespirationMinutes": 30,
"restObservationMinutes": 120
},
"output": {
"fraction": 0.25,
"remainder": 90
}
} Limitations and assumptions
- The denominator is supplied resting observation time, not all time or a breathing-rate denominator; no animal-health assessment is made.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
For identity or type status, inspect the original specimen record and cited nomenclatural authority. For behavior or visibility, review the actual observation series and its codebook; this helper preserves one stated label or counting convention.
